Those in attendance were glad they were, as the speed, agility and hard hitting action kept fans on their feet.  The bout began innocently with the teams trading punches in what began as a low scoring affair.  With 5 jams in the books, Killamazoo led 9-8.  The scoring picked up in subsequent jams, but neither team could separate from the other as each team’s jammer matched the other’s nearly point for point.  It wasn’t until mid-way through the first period that Paper Valley ‘s Chop Stikya scored 10 points while Killamazoo‘s Lady Hawk sat in the penalty box in Jam 10.  Jam 12 saw Paper Valley’s Pissy Pistol earn lead and score a 9-0 jam versus Letha Venom to open up an 18 point lead at 42-24.  The remainder of the first period saw both teams playing a “point prevention” game, with neither team scoring many unanswered points.   Paper Valley had stretched their lead to 74-49 at the break.

It appeared Paper Valley was ready to blow the bout wide open when they started the second period with Pissy Pistol scoring a 9-0 jam over Charisnakov, who was sent to the penalty box.  Killamazoo responded promptly with Lady Hawk scoring 7-2 and 10-3 jams versus Blazin’ Britches as both jammers traded time in the penalty box.  Killamazoo shut out the Paper Valley squad the next four jams while putting up 8 points of their own during that time.  The teams traded points until Killamazoo‘s Terrorhawk scored a 10-0 jam over Chop Stikya in the period’s 16th jam to pull within 3 points at 103-100.  Back at full strength in the pack after spending a lot of the middle portion of second period with multiple blockers in the box, Paper Valley eased the concerns of the home crowd as they showed off their defensive skills by shutting out Killamazoo in 4 of the period’s final 6 jams.  Although not scoring much themselves, Paper   Valley was shut out in only one of those jams while scoring steady (but small) point margin wins over Killamazoo.

“This was a big bout for us, hopefully putting us on the map,” said General Manager Fisted Cysta.  “Killamazoo Derby Darlins’ are a force to be reckoned with in the derby world.  PVRG is so honored to have learned so much from them, they are great competitors.”

Javelin of Kilamamazoo and Neva Soba of Paper Valley were awarded the Most Valuable Blocker awards, while TerrorHawk and Pissy Pistol were awarded the Most Valuable Jammer awards.

Leading scorer for the bout was Pissy Pistol with 66 points.  Chop Stikya contributed 35 points for Paper Valley and Grin’ Reaper added 13.  Lady Hawk scored 44 for the visitors while Charisnakov added 22 and TerrorHawk added 25.

PVRG All Starts vs NSRG Northern Lights

March 19th, 2009

PVRG vs. Nothern Lights DerbyThe Paper Valley Roller Girls (PVRG ) sprinted to a 165-93 victory over visiting North Star Roller Girls (Northern Lights) on March 28, 2009 in front of a near sell-out crowd at the Skater’s Edge in Grand Chute, WI.

Nothern Lights got an early and heavy dose of PVRG ‘s speed as PVRG jammers Pissy Pistol and Chop Stikya combined to help PVRG sprint to a 30-4 lead after only two jams.  Early jams saw the speedy PVRG jammers successfully navigate the outside in passing the Northern Lights blockers.  The North Star blockers soon adjusted and began working together to build formidable walls.  The tactic slowed PVRG ‘s early momentum.  At the break, PVRG led 87-40.

The second half saw PVRG continue their tactic of recycling blockers at the front of pack.  Meanwhile, Northern Lights adopted a new tactic to counter the PVRG defense.  Northern Lights blockers frequently and effectively slowed the pack, leaving PVRG defenders out of play and unable to defend the Northern Lights jammers.  PVRG rode the strength of their strong start and several high scoring jams to secure the 165-93 win.

Pissy Pistol, Chop StikYa, Cyanide Ride, Grin Reaper and Eye Dropher all tallied for PVRG .  Scorers for Northern Lights included Rhea Lentless, Shiva Shankin, Tara Bichapart, Betty LaRude and Wake O’Standoff.  Leading scorers were Chop StikYa (56), Pissy Pistol (54), Tara Bichapart (39), Grin’ Reaper (39) and Rhea Lentless (36).

PVRG is in action next on April 18, 2009 when they host the Killamazoo Derby Darlins of Kalamazoo, MI.  The Northern Lights squad will take on the Vaudville Vixens of the Mad Rollin’ Dolls on April 4, 2009 in Madison, WI.

Blizzard Brawl — PVRG All Stars vs ToRD’s CN Power

January 18th, 2009

It seemed unlikely that the league touted as the “largest flat-track derby league in North America” would travel to sleepy Appleton , WI to bout against a team formed as recently as August ’08.  But that’s what happened when CN Power, the traveling team of Toronto Roller Derby (ToRD), invaded Skater’s Edge to take on the Paper Valley Roller Girls (PVRG ).  The idea came to fruition in front of a capacity crowd at the Skater’s Edge on January 17, 2009.  The bout, the home opener for PVRG , is presumed to be the first international roller derby bout played on Wisconsin soil.  The home debut proved to be a successful one for PVRG as they held on to narrowly defeat CN Power 88-79.

It was apparent early on that the teams were evenly matched in terms of speed and physicality.  In fact, neither team enjoyed an advantage greater than 13 points throughout the entire contest.   The action was fast-paced, hard hitting and the penalty boxes were frequently visited.  Walls of PVRG defenders frustrated the CN Power jammers, and forced several track cutting majors.  The CN Power defense was equally as stout, led by impressive work from their pivots.  Ultimately, the downfall of the Canadian squad proved to be untimely visits to the penalty box by their jammers.  PVRG squeezed enough points out of their power jam opportunities to put them in position for the win.

Period 1

To the delight of the home crowd, Pissy Pistol earned lead jammer status in the bout’s opening jam, however, CN Power’s DefeCaitlin recovered to force the PVRG jammer to call off the jam at 1-1 as she was knocked off her feet by a CN Power blocker.  CN Power’s defense held PVRG jammers scoreless in the next three jams as Jewel Kicker and Bambi scored for CN Power.  Pissy Pistol scored a 9-0 jam against Candy Crossbones to give PVRG a 10-8 lead.  Lunchbox and DefeCaitlin each scored 4 point jams as CN Power shut out PVRG on the next three jams.  Grin’ Reaper broke PVRG ’s drought by scoring a 9-0 jam over Bambi that catapulted PVRG back into the lead.  Following a scoreless jam, Pissy Pistol outscored CN Power’s Candy Crossbones 5-0.  CN Power broke a scoreless stretch of 4 jams when Lunchbox and DefeCaitlin combined for 9 points on the next two jams to take a 25-24 lead.  That would be the last points surrendered by the PVRG defense this period, as PVRG ’s Chop StikYa would score 5 in the 14th jam of the period and Grin’ Reaper exploded for 9 in the 15th jam.  The period ended with a pair of scoreless jams.  PVRG led 38-25 at the break in what would prove to be the largest lead either team would muster all night.

Period 2

Coming out of the break, CN Power appeared to have solved how to break past the PVRG walls as their jammers scored steadily as DefeCaitlin, Lunchbox, Bambi and Dolly Destructo outscored the PVRG jammers 16-4 in the first four jams of the second period to cut the deficit to a single point.  In the fifth jam, Chop StikYa outscored DefeCaitlin 5-0 to afford PVRG a little breathing room.  In the 8th jam, Lunchbox scored an 8-4 jam over Chop StikYa as CN Power pulled back to within one point.  The two teams traded blows the remainder of the period with the defenses holding their opposing jammers to modest point gains.  After 18 jams, PVRG clung to a 77-71 lead.  The 19th jam proved to be the back breaker for CN Power as PVRG ’s Grin’ Reaper outscored DefeCaitlin 9-0 in a jam where neither jammer earned lead.  The final jam of the period rolled off with PVRG leading 86-75.  The PVRG defense held Bambi to 4 points, while PVRG ’s Snap CrakYa Pop scored 2 in another jam that featured no lead, securing the win.

PVRG attempts to extend their un-beaten streak to three when they take on the Mississippi Roller Girls in Gulfport , MS on February 28th. Notes

PVRG jammer Pissy Pistol earned lead jammer status on an impressive 5 of 6 attempts but was saddled by penalty problems that limited her opportunities to jam.

PVRG All Stars vs G-Rap Attack

November 18th, 2008

PVRG STUNS G-RAP ATTACK WITH COMEBACK

Grand Rapids, MI  November 17, 2008

>pvrg_2The Paper Valley Roller Girls (PVRG ) traveled to Grand Rapids , MI on November 17, 2008 to take part in a derby double header. The first bout of the night featured PVRG versus G-Rap Attack. The second contest featured a WFTDA sanctioned bout between The Burning River All-Stars (Cleveland, OH) and the Grand Raggidy All-Stars.

Fighting travel weary legs, nerves and an unfamiliar track surface, PVRG staggered out the blocks in the nights opening bout. PVRG jammers found it difficult to break past the G-Rap defenders, mustering only 5 points in the bouts first 10 jams. The more experienced G-Rap Attack skaters were seemingly in control, leading 25-5 after 10 jams. PVRG never allowed G-Rap to break the game open, however, making G-Rap work hard for modest point gains. Pissy Pistol broke a scoreless stretch that spanned 5 successive jams, scoring 4 points for in the 11th jam. Chop Stikya outscored ShamPain4U 10-0 in the ensuing jam to close the gap. Nonetheless, PVRG headed to the locker room facing a 25-40 deficit.

Bolstered by their steady defensive effort in the first period, and belief in an offense that began to show signs of life late in the first period, PVRG toed the line for the start of the second period with renewed confidence. Grin Reaper got things rolling with a 7-0 jam versus Keisha Mei Ash and Chop Stikya put a 8-0 jam on Tamara Hurstworse to tie the game at 45-45. PVRG took their first lead on the ensuing jam as Pissy Pistol outscored ShamPain4U 3-0. Pissy Pistol exploded for 10 points in the 5th jam of the period as the small but boisterous PVRG supporters chanted “PV. . . RG . . . PV . . . RG”. PVRG ran into penalty problems in the middle of the second period and the lead that had grown to 13 points, was gradually whittled down to only a 2 point advantage. During that stretch, Gynomite came up big for PVRG helping her team survive its penalty woes by earning lead jammer in jams 9 and 12, outscoring her G-Rap counterparts 6-0 during that time. Finally back at full strength, PVRG skaters put the game away by earning lead jammer status in 5 successive jams, much to the pleasure of the PVRG fans. PVRG took the win 78-69. The upset win represented their first ever win in inter-league play, in just their first attempt.

In the second bout of the night, Grand Raggidy took care of the Burning River All-Stars by a final score of 107 to 53.

At the after-party, PVRG ’s own Pissy Pistol and Burning River ’s Rogue Cheddar were declared the winners of their respective “pants off, dance off” contests.
